Bordeaux was established on 1 October 1881 as a multi-sports club and is one of France's most successful football clubs. The club grabbed its name Girondins from the demonym for people from the arena and was started on 1 October 1881 as a shooting and gymnastics club.

Later the club added swimming, rowing, equestrian, and others. Football was officially introduced to the club in 1910. The club contested its first official match as a football team in 1920, defeating Section Burdigalienne 12–0.

Les Girondins (The Girondins), le club au Scapulaire (the Scapular club), and Les Marines et Blanc (the Marines and Whites) are the three nicknames of the club, and FCGB is a short name.

Memorable Moments of Bordeaux

On 25 May 1941, Bordeaux tasted their first official significant titles. Girondins ASP de Bordeaux defeated SC Fives 2–0 thanks to goals Santiago Urtizberea in the 1941 Coupe de France Final at Stade Municipal, Saint-Ouen.

The most memorable and joyous moment of Bordeaux came in 1950. FC Girondins de Bordeaux won Division 1 season (Frnech Ligue 1) 1949/1950 of the French Association Football League with 51 points. The club won the Ligue 1 championship for the first time in its history.

The 2008–09 Fench Ligue 1 season was the 71st of Ligue 1 and time to a bounce-back of Bordeaux. Bordeaux claimed the championship for the sixth time on the season last weekend.

The club consecutively won their last 11 league matches of the season and won the title on 30 May 2009 after clinching a 1–0 victory against Caen. This was Bordeaux's sixth Ligue 1 title and first since the 1998–99 season.
