History of Borussia Dortmund

A group of 18 young men from the city of Dortmund decided to create a sports club. Founders took the club name's first part from the nearby Borussia brewery in Dortmund. And on 19 December 1909, they founded Borussia Dortmund.

The club hardly avoided bankruptcy in 1929, and being an anti-Nazi-oriented club during the Third Reich regime definitely didn't help matters. Their first victory of silverware came in the mid-50s, with two consecutive national titles in 1956 and 1957.

Borussia Dortmund has four different nicknames. These are “Die Borussen”, “Die Schwarzgelben (The Black and Yellows)” and “Der BVB (The BVB)”.
