History of Celta Vigo

R.C. Celta de Vigo was created due to the ambition of Vigo's teams to attain more at the national level, where the Basque sides had been their bête noire in the Spanish domestic football Championship.

The concept was to merge both teams to create a more powerful team at the national level. On 12 July 1923, the merger was approved at the annual general meetings (AGMs) of Fortuna and Vigo held at the Odeon Theatre and in the Hotel Moderno, respectively. And "Team of Galicia" was born, as it was renamed.

In the last annual general meeting of Fortuna and Vigo to approve the joint formation of a new football club held on 10 August 1923, the members marked upon the team's name. And on 10 August 1923, the Club Celta was born.

Club Badge and Colors of Celta Vigo

Celta Vigo's original crest was relatively simple, featuring two stylized letters Cs (Club Celta) and the royal crown of Spain into a red shield. The shield is in the traditional sky blue color.

In 1928, the Club included the red cross of Saint James like many other Galician clubs. The respected title and crown were removed from the Club's name and badge during the Spanish Civil War.
