Copa Colombia on tv and stream

The Copa Colombia is one of Colombia's top division football competitions, contested throughout a calendar year. Due to sponsorship reasons, the competition is now officially known as Copa BetPlay Dimayor.

The Colombian most reputed and prestigious cup competition is equivalent to the FA Cup in England or the Copa del Rey in Spain. DIMAYOR is the operating authority and governing body of the competition.

History of Copa Colombia

The Copa Colombia was founded in 1950 by División Mayor del Fútbol Profesional Colombiano (DIMAYOR), after the first two campaigns of the professional league. Boca Juniors de Cali has won the first edition and defeated Santa Fe by 7–6 aggregate.

After arranging the second edition, the following edition of the tournament was played after three years in 1956. As with the previous editions, there are hesitations about the existence of the 1962–63 edition.

The Copa Colombia cup would not be contested until 1981, when the tournament was included as a part of the league. The Colombian cup's champion automatically qualified for the final stage of the league for the following season.

In 1989, another edition of the competition was played as a part of the league. The leading four teams of the tournament gain a bonus point in the league. The top four teams of the comptetion were Santa Fe, Unión Magdalena, Junior and América de Cali. This was the last campaign of the Copa Colombia until 2008.

On 14 February 2008, the 36 associate members of the DIMAYOR decided to organize a new nationwide cup competition. All Colombian football league system teams were able to participate in this event. Due to sponsorship with Postobón, "Copa Postobón" was the official name of this tournament, which was also the league's sponsor. La Equidad has won the first edition of the new cup competition format of Copa Colombia.

Competition Format of Copa Colombia

The current format of the Copa Colombia was the same one used for the 2018 and 2020 editions, with the tournament being played in a single-elimination phase in its finishing, without any group stages.

The 16 Categoría Primera B teams joined the competition in the first stage. After two stages, four Primera B teams advanced to the third stage, ten Categoría Primera A teams that did not participate in international competition in the last season and entered the cup.

Finally, the seven third stage winners were joined in the round of 16 by the four Copa Libertadores qualifiers, the four qualifiers of Copa Sudamericana, and the best Primera A team that did not qualify for international competition in the previous season, entered the competition at this point. Unlike the previous edition, the tournament follows the single-leg format in the round of 16. And a two-legged system starts from the quarterfinals.
