History of Danish Superliga

Established in 1991, the Danish Superliga replaced the Danish First Division as the highest football league in Denmark. In early 1991, 10 teams were playing. The first Superliga season was played during the spring of 1991, with the ten clubs playing each other twice for the championship honor.

From mid-1991, the tournament structure would expand over two calendar years. The ten teams would play each other two times in the first half of the competition. In the following spring, the lower-ranked two clubs would be cut off; the clubs' points would be cut in half. And the rest of the eight teams would once more match each other twice, for a total of 32 matches in a whole season.

This practice session was abandoned before the 1995–96 season, when the number of clubs was playing increased to 12, competing with each other thrice for 33 games per Superliga season. For the opening season of this new format, Coca-Cola became the name sponsor of the l Danish Superliga, which was then named Coca-Cola Ligaen.

The following year the Danish Superliga changed its name to Faxe Kondi Ligaen due to the sponsorship replaced by Faxe Brewery. Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) played the head sponsor role until the 2001-02 season. Danish Superliga became known as Alka Superliga in January 2015 as the Danish insurance company Alka became the name sponsor of this competition.

Competition Format of Danish Superliga

The new league structure was introduced in the 2016–17 season for the first time. It started with the teams playing a complete home-and-away fixture, resulting in 26 matches for each team. At that time, the competition was divided into a six-team for championship playoff and an eight-team for qualifying playoff.

Each team competes with the others home and away again in the championship playoff. At the end of the play-ff, the top-ranked team is Superliga champion and enters the Champions League in the second qualifying round.

The qualifying playoff section is split into two groups, with the teams that finished the regular season in seventh, tenth, eleventh, and fourteenth in one group. And whose finishing eighth, ninth, twelfth, and thirteenth place in the other group.

Each group plays home and away games within its group. The top-ranked two teams from each group enter a knockout competition, with each match over two legs. Suppose the Danish Cup champions are among the top two finishers in either playoff group. In that case, it is withdrawn from the knockout playoff, and its opponent automatically advances to the tournament final.
