English National League is the lowest divisional professional league in England. The National League is known as the Vanarama National League for sponsorship reasons. It is the highest rank of the National League System and the 5th-highest of the overall English football league system.

History of English National League

The league was formed in 1979 as the Alliance Premier League and took place for its opening season for the 1979–80 season. The league drew its clubs from the Southern and Northern Premier League.

It significantly improved the quality of football at this lower level and improved the financial status of the top clubs. A better result of starting this system saw in 1986–87. At that time, The English Football League began to accept direct promotion and relegation system between the Conference and the lowest-ranked football league division, known as now EFL League Two (Football League Fourth Division).

The league has been accepted a 2nd promotion place, with a playoff game which joins the champions in League Two since 2002-03. A club is replaced to the highest-ranked when a top-placed club gets an automatic promotion or the playoff position without having a good stadium.

The Conference enlarged its size by adding the Conference North and Conference South respectively in 2004–05, also lower divisions. With the original division, it's renamed as Conference National.

Competition format of English National League

Officially the Conference National, the league was renamed the National League from the 2015–16 season. The longest-tenured team currently competing in the National League is Wrexham, having been in the National League since the 2008–09 season.

Currently, English National League consists of 23 teams, where 22 teams participated from England and only one tam from Wales. But the league introduces a new structure for the current 2021-22 seasons, where 24 teams participate in this contest from North and South divisions.

The top two teams will get promotions from the National League to League 2 and be replaced by two bottom teams relegated from it. Three bottom teams will be relegated from the National League to the second level Six Divisions and replaced by four clubs where two from each of the National League North and South Division.

Thirty-Two teams have won the English National League titles from its inception since 1979-80 seasons. There are also 19 teams who won the playoff, which started from the 2002–03 season.

Barnet and Macclesfield Town won the title three times. Altrincham, Enfield, Maidstone United, Macclesfield Town, Kidderminster Harriers, Barnet, Stevenage Borough, Cheltenham Town, Lincoln City has won the English National League title two times each.

Runcorn, Enfield, Maidstone United, Wealdstone, Scarborough, Lincoln City, Darlington, Barnet, Colchester United, Wycombe Wanderers, Kidderminster Harriers, Macclesfield Town, Stevenage Borough, Halifax Town, Cheltenham Town won it one time.

Also, Rushden & Diamonds, Boston United, Yeovil Town, Chester City, Accrington Stanley, Dagenham & Redbridge, Aldershot Town, Burton Albion, Crawley Town, Fleetwood Town, Mansfield Town, Luton Town, Leyton Orient, Barrow, and Sutton United won the title at least once.

The English center-forward Michael Cheek scored the highest 114 goals in 268 appearances for four different clubs in the English National League. With 104 goals in 243 appearances and 102 goals in 286 appearances, Andy Cook and James Norwood are reportedly sitting on the second and third highest goalscorer places.
