History of Greek Super League

The history of the Greek Super League began with a Panhellenic Championship in 1905, where teams played from Athens and Piraeus. Two football associations were created after the First World War, one organizing a football league in Athens and Piraeus and the other in Thessaloniki.

Founded in 1926, the Hellenic Football Federation organized the first Panhellenic Championship in the 1927-28 season with teams from Piraeus, Athens, and Thessaloniki, excluding the provincial ones. The first presence of regional teams in a single group of the Panhellenic Championship holds in 1953-54.

Alpha Ethniki was set up as the precursor of the current Super League as a national round-robin tournament in 1959. And the first nationwide league competition took place in the 1959–60 season. Greek Super League was established on 16 July 2006 and replaced Alpha Ethniki at the top-flight of the Greek football league system.

Competition Format of Greek Super League

Currently, 14 teams compete in the Super League Greece, playing each other in a 26-game home and away system. At the last stage of a season, the top six teams fight each other in a 10-game championship round to determine the Super League champions. And the teams go to participate in the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa Conference League.

The lower-placed eight clubs face each other in play-outs to decide who gets relegated to Super League 2. The top-ranked two teams from Super League 2 gained promotion in their place. The number of clubs to be relegated may change, depending on a licensing procedure at the end of the regular season of the contest.
