History of Heart of Midlothian

The group was formed by a group of friends from the Heart of Midlothian Quadrille Assembly Club. A group of friends bought the ball before playing local rules in Tron, where they were directed by a local police officer to play in The Meadows. Local football was a mixture of rugby and football associations.

In December 1873, a match was arranged at Raimes Park in Bonnington between the XI's selected by Mr. Thomson of Queens Park and Mr. Gardner of Clydesdale. Mr. Thomson of Queens Park won the match. It was the first time that the Society's rules in Edinburgh were recognized. Members of the dance club watched the game and, in 1874, decided to adopt the club's rules.

The new side was the Heart of Mid-Lothian Football Club. The first mention of Midlothian Heart in sports is a Scotsman newspaper report of July 20, 1864, by The Scotsman vs. Heart of Mid-Lothian in cricket.

It is unknown whether this was the first team to establish a soccer team, but it was common for soccer teams to play other games in those days. On August 30, 2021, Ann Budge officially transferred the clubs' shares to the Foundation of Hearts, meaning that Hearts became the largest fan club in the United Kingdom.
