History of Levante

Levante UD was officially registered as Levante Football Club on 9 September 1909. Levante Union Deportiva has the eastern region of the Iberian Peninsula as its exact name. Levante is the east coast of Spain, where the sun always rises. Levante UD is the most senior professional football club in the autonomous community of Valencia. Valencia CF has the local rivals with Levante UD. In 1935, the Second Division football league was expanded from 10 teams to 24. And in the following seasons, 1934–35, Levante got a chance to play in the Second Division. Levante won the Campeonato Levante-Sur titles in 1935. It was a competition that featured Valencia, Andalusia, and Murcia teams. Through this competition, Levante subsequently reached the semi-finals of the Spanish Cup, consecutively beating Valencia and Barcelona before losing to eventual runners-up Sabadell. Levante could not play in La Liga before the 1960s. Defeating Deportivo de La Coruña 4–2 on aggregate, Levante finished runner-up in the Second Division from Group II. And finally, Levante got promoted to La Liga in 1963.

The most notable feature of Levante's logo is the bat that sits behind the badge. The bat is the symbolic reference of the autonomous community of Valencia, home to the football club. The bat was the humble intervention that allowed king James I of Aragon to win a crucial fight against the Saracens and save Valencia as part of his territory. The badge also contains the club's nickname "Las Granotas." The ancient Levante stadium was near the Turia river, which housed many frogs, hence the nickname. The Italian football manager and former player Alessio Lisci is the current manager of the Spanish La Liga club Levante UD. Alessio Lisci joined the club on 29 November 2021. Under Lisci's management, Levante played a total of 11 games, where the club won three, lost six, and has drawn the rest of the two.

Levante UD won Copa de la España Libre in 1937, Segunda Division in 2003–04 and 2016–17. The club also achieved Segunda Division B titles five times in 1978–79, 1988–89, 1994–95, 1995–96 and 1998–99.
