Major League Soccer is the name of a men's professional soccer league competition authorized by the United States Soccer Federation. MLS is the short name of the competition. The league is the sport's highest division in the United States.
Although the league is not one of the "Big Four," the MLS and the Canadian Football League are contemplated one of the "Big Six" major professional sports competitions in the United States and Canada. Midtown Manhattan is the headquarters of the league.
Major League Soccer is such a league that is the most recent competition of men's premier professional national soccer leagues run in the United States and Canada. The progenitor of MLS was the North American Soccer League (NASL), which existed from 1968 to 1984.
Major League Soccer was created in 1993 as part of the United States' successful offer to host the 1994 FIFA World Cup. The opening season took place in 1996 with ten clubs. MLS experienced operational and financial struggles in its early years, losing millions of dollars and folding two clubs in 2002.
Since the crisis, developments such as the proliferation of soccer-specific stadiums around the competition, implementation of the Designated Player Rule approving teams to sign star players like David Beckham, and national TV contracts have made MLS more profitable.
The MLS comprises 28 teams—25 belonging from the U.S. and 3 from Canada—and ideas to expand to 30 teams by the 2023 campaign. The MLS regular season usually starts in late February or early March, and the contest runs through mid of October, with each participant team playing 34 games.
The team with the best record is given the Supporters' Shield. Fourteen clubs compete in the postseason MLS Cup playoffs in October and November, culminating in the league's championship match.
Thirty different clubs have played in the league, with 14 having won at least one MLS Cup till the 2021 season and 15 winning at least one Supporters' Shield. The same club has won two trophies in the same year on seven occasions (two clubs have accomplished the feat twice).
LA Galaxy won it the most five times in terms of MLS Cup-winning and second D.C. United won four times. Columbus Crew, San Jose Earthquakes, Sporting Kansas City, Seattle Sounders FC, and Houston Dynamo FC have won MLS Cup twice each.
LA Galaxy (4), D.C. United (4), Columbus Crew (3), San Jose Earthquakes, New York Red Bulls (3), and ten more teams have won the MLS Supporters Shield.
Chris Wondolowski holds the top goalscorer record in Major League Soccer, with 171 goals scored between 2005 and 2021. With 145 goals, Landon Donovan is the second, and, with 134 goals, Jeff Cunningham is the third-highest goalscorer in the league.
Landon Donovan has provided the highest 136 assists for teams in the MLS, and Steve Ralston assisted the second highest 135 goals. Nick Rimando has made the maximum 514 appearances in MLS.
