History of Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough FC was formed in 1876 and won the FA Amateur Cup for the first time in 1895 and again in 1898. The club became professional in 1889 but reverted to amateur status in 1892. They again became professional permanently in 1899. After three seasons, they earned a promotion to the First Division, where they would stay for the next 22 years.

The club went down in 1923-24 from the First division, but after winning the Division Two title 1926-27, they came back in the top flight for only one season and again got relegated. After winning another Second Division title getting promotion in the top flight in the 1927-28 season.

Middlesbrough was able to win their first silverware as a professional team in the 1975–76 season, winning the Anglo-Scottish Cup in its opening season after a two-legged final win over Fulham. The club faced severe financial problems during the mid-1980s.
