History of Millwall

The club was formed in 1885 as Millwall Rovers by the canning and preserves factory workers named J.T. Morton's located in the Millwall area of the Isle of Dogs in London's East End. They played their first match against East London's team Fillebrook on 3 October 1885 and lost by 0-5.

After moving to the new ground, The Athletic Grounds dropped "Rovers" from their name and started to play as new name Millwall Athletic. The club was founding members of the Southern Football League, which they won for the first two years of its existence, and were finalists in its third season.

The club reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 1900 and 1903 and was also winners of the Western Football League twice in 1908 and 1909. Millwall played their last match as an East London club against Woolwich Arsenal in the London Challenge Cup on 10 October 1910 and won 1-0.

Millwall got the invitation to join the Football League in 1920 for the 1920–21 season, along with 22 other English clubs, by forming the new Football League Third Division. The club won the Third Division South title in the 1927–28 season and scored 87 goals at home ground in the league, which still stands as an English record.

Millwall won the Second Division championship in 1988 and gained promotion to the top flight of the English football league system for the very first time in the club's history.
