History of Villarreal

On 10 March 1923, Villarreal CF was established as Club Deportivo Villarreal with the slogan "to promote all sports, especially football." Villarreal played their first match ever, playing against Castellón on 21 October of that year. Villarreal began off with a kit of white shirts and black shorts, reflected in their first badge.

From its inception, Villarreal spent much of its history in the lower divisions of Spanish football. The club made its La Liga debut in 1998. In the 21st century, Villarreal achieved some league stability, and the club participated in the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 2005.

During this time, the club also started to play in the UEFA Europa League but fell on relegation in 2012, rebounding the next year and staying in the top division till now. Villarreal won its first major trophy in 2021 by defeating Manchester United in the 2021 UEFA Europa League Final.

Club Badge and Colors of Villarreal

The crown atop the flag represents the town's royal history; Villarreal, literally 'Royal Village,' was established by King James I of Aragon.

While blue and yellow is the current primary colors of Villarreal CF, the club colors were black and white until 1947. The story goes that one of the administrations traveled to Valencia to buy replacement kits, finding only yellow shirts were available.
