The Baltimore Ravens were founded in 1996 by Art Modell, then owner of the Cleveland Browns, who announced ideas in 1995 to relocate the team from Cleveland, Ohio, to Baltimore, Maryland.

As part of a deal between the league and the city of Cleveland, Ohio, Modell was proposed to leave the Browns' history, team colors, logos, and records in Cleveland for a replacement franchise and started playing again in 1999.

A fan contest was organized to rename the team, with fans choosing the team's current name, "The Ravens." The team's name comes from Edgar Allan Poe's poem "The Raven."
