Established in 1933, the Steelers were the seventh-oldest American football team in the NFL and the oldest franchise in the AFC. In contrast with their status as long-lived also-rans in the pre-merger NFL, the team was the oldest AFC franchise never to have won a league championship. But in the post-merger (modern) era, the Steelers have become the most successful NFL franchise.

The Steelers joined the NFL as the Pittsburgh Pirates for the first season on 8 July 1933. The foundation story of the franchise began in the early 1920s when Art Rooney owned the team and took the name from a local baseball team. To distinguish the football team from the baseball team, local media started calling them the Rooneymen. This unofficial nickname continued for decades after the team had adopted its current nickname.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are tied with the New England Patriots for the most Super Bowl championships at six. Both teams have played sixteen times and hosted eleven times more conference championship games than any other franchise in the NFL.

The franchise has also won eight AFC championships, equaled with the Denver Broncos. But only behind the Patriots' record eleven AFC championship titles. They are tied with the Broncos and Dallas Cowboys for the second-most eight Super Bowl appearances. On 6 February 2011, they lost their most recent championship appearance, Super Bowl XLV.
