History of Swedish Allsvenskan

Swedish Allsvenskan started in the 1924–25 Allsvenskan season as the replacement of the Svenska Serien, consisting of a southern and northern group. GAIS was the first winner of Allsvenskan. It started with the twelve-team of the one-league. The league began to decide the Swedish football champions in 1931.

In the early period, Norrland and Gotland teams were not granted to participate on top-tiers in the league system. But it was gradually changed to include the Gotland and Norrland teams on top-tier.

During the 1959 Allsvenskan, the season kick-off time was changed from autumn to spring to compete in one calendar year. The number of participants increased to14 from 12 in 1973. In the decade 1970, Malmö FF won five Allsvenskan titles and reached the 1979 European Cup Final under Antonio Durán and English Bob Houghton.

The league started a playoff system to determine the Swedish football champions since the 1982 season. In the late 1980s, Malmö FF was predominant, winning the five consecutive league titles, but could manage only two Swedish championships.

The classical format of 144 teams returns in the 1993 season of Allsvenskan. The league saw the best period of IFK Göteborg in the 1990s when they won five Allsvenskan league titles.

The list of influential club names also changes over time, such as in the later 2000s, Djurgårdens IF won three league titles (2002, 2003, and 2005). Assyriska FF entered the league again in 2004 when Örebro SK splashed for its financial problems.

Competition Format of Swedish Allsvenskan

Allsvenskan consists of 16 teams from 2008. Usually, a regular season of this competition runs from late March or early April to early November. 16 clubs meet each other two times in this competition, resulting in a 30 matches season for 240 matches league-wide.

At the end of the season, the two lowest-ranked teams punished the demotion to Superettan, and the top-ranked two teams from Superettan gained promotion in their place. The 3rd lowest team in Allsvenskan plays a relegation or promotion playoff against the 3rd placed team in Superettan.
