History of French Ligue 1

Before July 1930, there was no professionalism in French football. After a 128-20 favor voting result, the National Council of the French Football Federation planned to start a professional football competition in France.

Georges Bayrou, Emmanuel Gambardella, and Gabriel Hanot are the great founders of professionalism in French football which was officially implemented in 1932.

Established in 1932, Ligue 1 (previously National and Division 1) is the top division of the professional French football league system. Ligue 1 became the top-level division of the French football league in 2002 before it was recognized Division 1.

The top-ranked French national football system division, Ligue 1, is the highest men's professional football league with 20 teams within the French Federation.

Competition Format of French Ligue 1

Twenty clubs are participating in Ligue 1. During the season's round, usually from August to May, each team plays the others twice, once at their home ground (stadium) and once at that of their opponents, for a total of 38 games. However, special situations may allow a club to host matches at other venues or stadiums.

Every team receives three points for a victory and one point for a draw. But for a loss-making game, the teams get zero points. Clubs are ranked by total points. But goal difference and goals scored calculate when multiple teams earn the same points from an equal number of games.

At the end of a whole season, the team with the most points is crowned champion. If points are equal, the difference of goal and goals scored determines the winner.

If still the calculation is equal, teams are deemed to settle the same position. And if there is a tie situation created for the championship, relegation, or qualification to other competitions, a play-off match organized at a neutral venue decides rank.
