The UEFA Europa League (simply UEL), formerly the UEFA Cup, is a football club competition arranged by the UEFA (officially named Union of European Football Associations) every year. Only European football clubs joined this campaign.

UEL is the second division competition of European club football, ranking below the UEFA Champions League and above the UEFA Europa Conference League. Between 1971 to 1999, it was the third-tier competition of UEFA.

History of UEFA Europa League

The UEFA Cup was introduced in 1971 as the replacement of the Inter-Cities Cup. The UEFA Cup Winners' Cup was joined with the UEFA Cup in 1999 and stopped playing as a separate competition. A group stage system was added before the knockout phase from the 2004–05 season.

Following a format change, the competition has been commonly known as the Europa League since the 2009–10 season. In 2009, it merged with the UEFA Intertoto Cup to produce an enlarged structure with an expanded group stage and some changes.

The UEFA Europa League winners qualify for the UEFA Super Cup and, since the 2014–15 season, allows for the following season's UEFA Champions League, entering at the group stage.

Competition Format of UEFA Europa League

The UEFA Europa League competition raised its profile after rebranding in the 2009-10 season. Now, eight more clubs can compete for the group stage after qualifying, including 12 groups with four clubs each with a double round-robin format; the top-ranked two teams in each group moved forward.

The current competition format was similar to the previous structure, with four rounds of two-legged knockout rounds and a single-leg final held at a neutral ground that met UEFA's Category Four stadium criteria. And the final match was played in May, on the Wednesday ten days before the Champions League final.
