Saint-Étienne was first founded in 1919 by a grocery store chain Groupe Casino employees as Amicale des Employes de la Société des Magasins Casino or ASC in short. They took green as its primary color mainly because it is the main color of Groupe Casino.

The club changed its name to simply Amical Sporting Club in 1920. Pierre Guichard became the club's president in 1927 and changed its name to Association sportive Stéphanoise due to merging with local club Stade Forézien Universitaire.

Association sportive Stéphanoise became professional and changed its name to its current version. They started playing in the Second Division and became an original member of the league after finishing runner-up in the South Group.

Under the management of Snella, Saint-Étienne won its first honor in 1955 after winning the Coupe Charles Drag. Two seasons later, they won their first domestic league title. Saint-Étienne lifted the Coupe Drago for the second time in 1958.

Saint-Étienne completed three seasons in the Second Division and returned to the First Division (Ligue 1) for the 2004–05 season. The club came 5th in the 2007–08 season, which resulted in them qualifying for the UEFA Cup for the first time since 1982.
