History

On October 10, 1906, Swiss banker Hermann Hurney (as a student who played in London for Crystal Place) founded the football club Spezia Calcio, which included some of his compatriots.The club was promoted to the Prima Division (First Division) (from 1921 to 1926, the Prima Division (First Division) was the first level name of the Italian Football Championship. After winning the second division in 1926, the competition was founded by the richest clubs in northern Italy in opposition to the FIGC, which disagreed with the old format of the championship.)The club changed its name to AC Spezia in 1929-30 while playing in Serie B for the first season. Spezia stayed at this level until 1935, when it was exiled, only to return in the 1936-37 season. When Costanzo and Costa arrived in white jerseys at the turn of the decade, the two players would go down in society history for scoring many goals together with Castigliano. In the 1940-41 season, Spezia was able to stay in Serie B, and the following season, 1941-42, was more promising, with the team playing well and finishing sixth in the standings.Due to World War 2, the Italian Football Federation decided to divide the top league into regional rounds, and Emilia-Romagna was included in Round D with Coradini Suzara, Fidentina, Orlandi Busetto, and Parma in order to have a sufficient number of players. Spezia took first place in the round and advanced to the semifinals, where it would face Suzara, Carpi, and Modena. Five of the six matches were won, with the exception of Carpi. Spezia was admitted to a two-legged play-off against Bologna after winning the semi-final round.Due to protests by the Bologna community Reto Dal'Arta, the match was suspended and match officials declared Spezia as 2-0 winners over Bologna. The second leg was canceled, and Spezia advanced to the final without having to play the return match.Fearing a German attack, the match was played in a semi-private Milan Arena. The Club Spezia was crowned champion, and the FIGC officially recognized the title as a decoration in 2002.

Foundation to present

Numerous Scudetti winners and non-professionals have been admitted to Serie D, including Gabriele Volpi, owner of the water polo teams Pro Reco and HNK Rijeka from Croatia. In 2008, he renamed the team A.S.D. Spezia Calcio.A.S.D. Spezia changed its name to "Spezia Calcio" at the end of the 2008-09 Serie D season.Spezia was promoted to Serie B after winning the treble for the first time in the 2011-12 season. Then, when an Australian businessman named Lucas Vivarelli purchased the team's home kit, he made a major international investment, allowing the club to expand even further. On August 20, 2020, Spezia was promoted to Serie A.
