Hibernian Football Club is a prominent professional football club in Scotland. The club is commonly known as Hibs. The club location is in the Leith area of Edinburgh, Scotland.

Hibernian FC was founded in 1875 by Irishmen living in the Cowgate area of Edinburgh. The name Hibernian took from Hibernia, an ancient name for Ireland.
The club proved itself as a force in Scottish domestic football in the 1880s. In 1887, they won the Scottish Cup and became the first club from the east coast of Scotland to win a major trophy.
Hibernians were joined to the Scottish Football League in 1893, although they had to win the Second Division title twice before being played into the First Division in 1895.
