The Southern League Cup is the origin of the Scottish League Cup, introduced in 1940 as a suspension of the Scottish Cup due to war. This tournament was primarily regional and did not involve all of the Scottish Football League teams before the prevalence of war. The first official Scottish Football League Cup was held during the 1946–47 season.

The tournament was very popular with supporters during the first few decades. Before starting the Premier League and expanding European competitions in the early 1980s, League Cup played with a long-winded format. But after that League Cup became shorter with a system of single-elimination knock-out format and final played prior to Christmas day.

Because of the fixture congestion with UEFA competitions Scotland's representatives in Europe, the semi-finals and final matches were moved to springtime during the 1999–2000 season. The League Cup redounds to a group stage format since the 2016–17 edition, with a single-elimination knock-out format in the last 16 onwards.

Competition Format of Scottish League Cup

Initially, the Scottish League Cup has swung between a straightforward single-elimination knock-out competition and an initial group phase. The League Cup contest has used a group phase system since the 2016–17 seasons.

The group phase format has eight groups of five teams competing with each other once in a round-robin format. A total of forty teams playing in the group stage contain the 38 league clubs who are not playing in UEFA competitions, along with two outsider teams.

In the group phase format, a win provides three points for and one point for a draw (no result), and none for a loss. A penalty shootout is played with the winning team earning a bonus point if matches are drawn after ninety minutes.

The eight-group top four teams progress into the second round, where five more teams joined in the League, who are participating in UEFA competitions. The League Cup then begins a single-elimination knock-out format competition. If necessary, all matches result from extra time and a penalty shootout, but there are no replays.
