History of Motherwell

The 17 May 1886 is the foundation date of Motherwell FC. The Scottish football club is a result of merging two local clubs, Glencairn FC and Alpha FC.

Both clubs met in Ballie's pub in the town's Merry Street and merged the two teams to create a club to represent the town at a higher level of football. Motherwell's debut fixture proved successful as they overcame Hamilton Academical 3–2.

The two decades of 1920 and 1930 were successful periods for the club. Motherwell has passed an unsuccessful time after Second World War. Motherwell was relegated for the first time at the end of the 1952–53 season, but they were promoted the following year.

The clubs recently bounced back with some more energetic young players and saw some successful moments in the early decades. They defeated Breidablik and Aalesunds in the 2010-11 seasons of European competition.

Motherwell reached the Scottish Cup final in 2011 but lost the final 0-3 against Celtic. The cub reached the qualifying round of the Champions League for the first time in the 2011–12 season. Motherwell saw even greater success in the 2012–13 season when they finished 2nd in the SPL.
