History of Scottish Championship

In 1890, the Scottish football league system was first established, and the guardian of Scotland football, the Scottish Football League, was created. The Scottish Football League continues professional football competitions in Scotland.

In 1975, the Scottish Football League system brought some changes, and they switched Division One and Division Two to the Premier Division and First Division, respectively. A second-tier had been added to the system since 1994.

In 1997, The Premier Division separated from the rest of the Scottish Football League to reform as the Scottish Premier League. But merged with Scottish football again in 2013, and it started with a new structure in 2013. As a result, Scottish Championship settled as level 2 in the pyramid in 2013.

Competition format of Scottish Championship

Each contestant team receives three points for a victory and one for a draw while they get zero points for a defeated game. The football club that earns the most points in a full season is declared the competition's winner. When the points are the same in multiple teams, the goal difference makes the difference in determining the winning team between those teams. But even after all these calculations are not resolved, the teams that get equal points participate in a champion-determining playoff match.

The champions got a straight promotion to the Scottish Premiership swapping positions with the bottom club of the Premiership. The contestants finished 2nd, 3rd, 4th in the Championship entered the two-legged Premiership playoff games.

For the promotion and relegation, the Championship playoff games system closely mirrors its Premiership opponents—the bottom-placed team in the Championship is automatically relegated. In contrast, the ninth-placed team undergoes playoff matches with the second, third and fourth positioned teams from the Scottish League One.
